Language Test CLB Converter 2026

The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) is the national standard used in Canada for describing, measuring and recognizing the English language proficiency of adult immigrants and prospective immigrants for living and working in Canada. IRCC uses the CLB to assess your language skills for immigration programs.

For English, IRCC accepts IELTS General, CELPIP-General, and PTE Core. For French, IRCC accepts TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Academic versions of these tests are not accepted for Express Entry or PNP permanent residency applications.

The minimum score depends on the specific Express Entry program. For the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), you need a minimum of CLB 7 in all four abilities. For the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), you need CLB 7 for NOC TEER 0 or 1 jobs, and CLB 5 for NOC TEER 2 or 3 jobs. For the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), you need CLB 5 for speaking and listening, and CLB 4 for reading and writing.
